All About Eyes: Products You Need to Keep Your Under Eye Area Glowing
Six years ago I went for my first facial with my mom (the monumental moment that got me hooked on skincare). I was asked to take my eye makeup off and proceeded to do so with the provided eye makeup remover and cotton pad. I vigorously scrubbed at my drugstore mascara, which was probably waterproof at the time, and I remember the esthetician yelling STOP! I had no idea what I could have been doing wrong and I remember being quite startled. She proceeded to tell me that it’s important to be gentle when wiping your makeup off, ESPECIALLY around the eyes. While it seems easier said than done, that is gently patting off your mascara rather than rubbing, the truth is she was right and the way we treat the skin around our eyes is so important considering how delicate our skin is. Ever since this moment I’ve made a conscious effort to be more gentle with my skin— no more rough wash clothes, no more aggressive scrubbing and MORE products made for eyes that help prevent aging and wrinkles!
Bottom line, our under eyes need a little more TLC, and through my years of searching for the perfect products, these five things have changed my under eye’s appearance drastically!
ODACITÉ
Ba+S Eye Contour Serum Concentrate
Price: $48.00
This eye serum is my go-to product before bed. Mix 1-2 drops with eye cream or apply it alone for a more intense treatment. It’s a one stop product that helps reduce fine lines, dark circles and puffiness.
ODACITÉ
Crystal Contour Gua Sha
Price: $45.00
The perfect tool to lift and sculpt your face and minimize puffiness around your eyes. While a jade roller works well too (especially for gently applying products), when it comes to a lift I’ve seen more drastic results from a gua sha.
GLOSSIER
Bubblewrap Eye and Lip Plumping Cream
Price: $26.00
My favorite product to start the day with. It’s a multipurpose plumping product that’s light and scentless (perfect for anyone with sensitive skin or eyes). It’s the perfect consistency and works well alone or under makeup. I also use this on my lips (another delicate area that needs extra TLC and hydration).
SEPHORA COLLECTION EYE MASK
moisturizing & brightening
Price: $5.00
I know what you’re thinking $5.00? BUT I seriously can’t get enough of these and the price is right so I’ve never looked further. My favorites are the Lychee (moisturizing and brightening) and the Cucumber (soothing and de-puffing). Use these before a night out, post flight or even in the morning!
SHISEIDO SUNCREEN
Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector
Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 42
Price: $35.00
So far this has been my all time favorite daily face sunscreen. I don’t love that it’s SPF 42 because what a random number but it really does work! It’s lightweight, doubles as a primer under make up and doesn’t make my skin look oily or clog my pores. Pair this with your favorite pair of sunnies and you’re one step closer to preventing wrinkles and keeping the skin around your eyes protected.
A few other tips and practices I follow when it comes to my under eyes…
Always pat the area around your eyes rather than rub. A jade roller is a great tool to apply product if you tend to have a heavy hand. Washing your face with water that’s on the cooler side helps brighten up your face, reduce puffiness and helps elasticity in the skin. Although this list doesn’t include an under eye cream since I felt this requires personal selection depending on your needs (less wrinkles, dark circles etc.) I do feel an under eye cream is vital! I prefer one with hyaluronic acid for added hydration to the area. And finally, a poor diet, lack of hydration and sleep can negatively impact the appearance of your under eyes, so drink up (H20 only), get plenty of sleep and avoid salty foods which can cause puffiness.
