How to Throw the Perfect Virtual Birthday Party
Some of my favorite posts to write about are those requested by others or ones that can really impact someone. Maybe it’s in a small way, but our digital world is vast and being able to connect with people and their ideas through this blog is so much fun for me. When my friend suggested this blog idea I couldn’t wait to get started on it and share with others this list we’ve come up with on how to throw the perfect virtual birthday party. If you or someone you love has a birthday coming up, plan one of these virtual birthday party ideas you can do at home.
Have a Netflix Party
Grab popcorn and a glass of wine and create a Netflix Party to celebrate. Watch your favorite movie or show with friends and family that are long distance and enjoy features like synchronized video playback and group chats! Note that you must be on a desktop and use Chrome for Netflix Party to work.
send a boomf bomb
A what? I thought the same thing, but once you see these adorable boxes you’ll quickly be searching your calendar for the next birthday. Boomf Boxes are confetti filled boxes you can customize with images. Think of it as a card but better!
Throw a themed zoom bash
You’ve probably got the hang of Zoom by now from frequent work meetings, happy hours or reunions so next time there’s a birthday spice things up a bit and give your Zoom bash a theme. I’ve also seen lots of celebrities and influencers doing random Zoom calls so keep an eye out for that as well. While having your favorite celeb may not be something you can plan, these are crazy times and you never know what you may be able to accomplish just by reaching out. Some of my favorite theme ideas include…
Mardi Gras
Ugly Sweater
ABC
Celebirties
90’s
Cinco de Mayo
Curate cocktails together
Send e-vites (paperless post has some free options) and host a virtual cocktail party. Make sure to send the ingredients ahead of time so everyone can get what they need, then make your cocktails together on Zoom! Then sit back, relax and put on your favorite playlist while you sip and celebrate!
Make a video montage
Collect special videos from family and friends and compile them together to send as a special birthday montage. While most of your friends and family surely wish they could be together in person, being able to send an extra special message is a heartfelt way to say Happy Birthday.
Have a drive by parade
Although this one may take some extra coordination, especially if you’re making it a surprise, it will surely bring a smile to anyone’s face. Gather a gang of friends and family, make signs and get balloons for a special birthday parade. While everyone will have to stay inside their cars, make sure to roll down your windows and sing happy birthday as you pass!
Have a pizza night
This will really work for any food but to me birthdays and pizza go hand in hand no matter if you’re turning 5 or 45! Similar to the cocktails, make sure to send the ingredient list ahead of time along with any instructions and cook you pizzas together over Zoom. Follow it up with wine and a game of trivia or virtual heads up!
send a dessert
This is pretty standard for any birthday but nonetheless you definitely can’t do a QuarantineBirthday without dessert. While this is dependent on your area, check in to see if any of your local bakeries are doing any DIY desserts. Mike’s Pastry in Boston is doing make your own cannolis. If you none of the small businesses around you are doing anything, check out this list of dessert ideas that ship throughout the US…
Order Diy kits
While I’ve touched on this in some of these other ideas, I feel like it honestly deserves its own spotlight. So many restaurants and companies are putting DIY kits and it’s a great way to support small businesses. Not to mention even doing a DIY that isn’t food or drink related is a great party idea, like tie dye, planting or painting! A few DIY ideas I’ve seen…
Fig Balloon Co
Ravioli Kit
Pretzel Kit
send personalized gifts
There are so many fun gift ideas you can send that add a personalized touch. Engrave a special bottle of spirits on The Engraved Bottle, order a customized image puzzle on Shutterfly (this one doubles not only as a gift but also as something to do), or customize a special scent on Yankee Candle. Whatever it is there’s nothing better than receiving a special package on your birthday
